Wisconsin Historical Society: Hammond Farmstead listed in the National Register of Historic Places

Town of Cottage Grove, Dane County, Wisconsin – The Wisconsin Historical Society announces the listing of the Hammond Farmstead in the National Register of Historic Places on September 1, 2023.

The Hammond Farmstead has been owned and operated by the Hammond family for more than 175 years, beginning in 1846 when Alexander Hammond constructed the earliest portion of his farmhouse. Hammond arrived in the Cottage Grove area by 1843 and met Caroline Brown; her family was the fourth to homestead in the township by 1841. The couple were married in the fall of 1846 and began farming on their own property the following year.

The Hammond Farmstead is an excellent local representation of an early family tobacco and dairy farm that evolved from the mid-nineteenth century to the mid-twentieth century. Along with the farmhouse, the property includes a dairy barn with an attached milk house, freestanding milk house, tobacco stripping house, garage, tobacco shed, silo with an attached trough, corn crib, and secondary house. These existing agricultural outbuildings were largely constructed between 1901 and about 1965 and reflect the evolving agricultural trends—from tobacco cultivation to dairy farming—that were prevalent in southeastern Dane County during this period. Please respect the privacy of the property owner.
