WED AM News: Institute for Women’s Leadership releases results of survey focused on Milwaukee women; Generac selected by U.S. DOE for Puerto Rico resilience effort

— Nearly half of women included in a recent survey of Milwaukee workers are seeking jobs with a different organization, compared to about a third of surveyed men.

Marquette University’s Institute for Women’s Leadership yesterday released results of the online survey as part of its report, “Milwaukee Women in the Workplace.” It was distributed in March through local professional organizations and tapped 1,590 people who work in the Milwaukee area, of which 66% identified themselves as women.

It asked respondents if they were looking for a job with a different employer, and 48% of women said they were, versus 35% for men. Asian women were more likely to be seeking employment elsewhere, with 55%, compared to 49% for Latina women and 46% for Black women.

Women were most likely to say a lack of opportunities for advancement was the main driver for looking for jobs elsewhere, with 21% of respondents. That was followed by pay, 18%, and lack of work/life balance, 16%.

Meanwhile, men were most likely to select work/life balance, with 21%, followed by pay at 19% and lack of opportunities for advancement at 16%.

Women were also more likely to say they experienced burnout, mental health challenges and difficulty achieving a work/life balance, at 49% versus 40% for men. Black women and Latinas were even more likely to answer in the affirmative, with 55% and 54%, respectively.

IWL Director and study author Jennica Webster said the study’s findings were concerning, but while the challenges it highlights are widespread, they’re not insurmountable.

“Business organizations, women’s professional groups, and community leaders all play a role in improving the lives of women in ways that drive the region forward,” she said in a statement.

The report also includes a number of recommendations for improving workplace satisfaction among women, including prioritizing health and well-being, supporting work/life balance, being “relentless” in providing equal pay for the same work and being transparent about it, and more.

— Generac Power Systems has been selected for grant negotiations through a U.S. Department of Energy effort to provide residential solar and battery storage systems to thousands of households in Puerto Rico.

The Waukesha company yesterday announced it is one of several vendors chosen by the DOE for the work, which will leverage up to $440 million from the Puerto Rico Energy Resilience Fund, according to a release. Generac says up to 40,000 vulnerable households will benefit, with installations happening as early as spring 2024.

Recipients will include residents of low-income areas with frequent and prolonged power outages, as well as people with an “energy-dependent disability.”

“As the island continues to grapple with extreme weather events and aging energy infrastructure, Generac’s solar + battery storage solutions will help keep the power on, while also helping to support job growth within the clean energy sector,” Generac CEO and President Aaron Jagdfeld said in a statement.

— The state Office of Energy Innovation this month is accepting applications for various clean energy grant programs, with about $20 million in Bipartisan Infrastructure Law funding available.

Gov. Tony Evers and the Public Service Commission yesterday highlighted funding opportunities through the Wisconsin Grid Resilience Grant Program, the Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block Grant Program, and the Energy Innovation Grant Program.

Evers in a statement said Wisconsin is making progress toward reaching its goal of hitting 100% carbon-free electricity by 2050.

“These grant programs represent a historic investment in our state’s future that will help us reach these goals, boost our economy, strengthen local communities, and protect our environment,” he said.

— Versiti is acquiring an Indianapolis consulting firm called Pearl Pathways, the Milwaukee-based blood health organization announced.

The firm specializes in the life science industry, advising businesses on product development, regulatory affairs, marketing and more. Its clients include companies with biopharmaceutical and diagnostic products, as well as medical devices.

Through the acquisition, Versiti will be able to “serve clinical trials sponsors earlier and with more depth in the development pathway,” according to the release. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Versiti President and CEO Chris Miskel says the move “enriches the scope and diversity of our research-based solutions” from the company’s clinical trials division.

“Pearl Pathways brings deep expertise in life science product development, which ultimately leads to getting life-saving devices, diagnostics, and therapeutics to patients faster,” Miskel said in a statement.

Versiti earlier this year acquired an Indiana specialty laboratory called Quantigen, after previously acquiring Texas-based Cenetron Central Laboratories and Salus IRB in 2019, the release shows. Versiti now has more than 2,300 employees across sites in Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, Texas, and Wisconsin.

— The Water Council is now taking applications for next year’s BREW 2.0 post-accelerator program, which supports established water tech startups.

The program — which stands for Business, Research & Entrepreneurship in Water — was first launched in 2021. This year’s cohort included 10 businesses from the United States and Europe, with products ranging from PFAS treatments to water quality monitoring.

One of those participants, a French company called Redberry SAS, has established a pilot program at Milwaukee Water Works, according to yesterday’s release. CEO Jonathan Macron said the experience “significantly paved the way for us” to enter the U.S. market.

“Through this program, we not only established connections with potential partners, customers and investors, but we also gained valuable insights from The Water Council on how to launch a business in the United States,” Macron said in a statement.

Applications are being accepted through Jan. 7, with finalist interviews taking place after that and candidate selections being made in March.
