UW-Madison: UW-Madison Day in Washington, DC

MADISON, WI (March 15, 2023) — Federal funding and policies have a dramatic impact on programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. The Wisconsin Foundation and Alumni Association (WFAA) is hosting a special UW-Madison Day in Washington, DC. Alumni and friends of the university will meet with members of Congress and hear from campus leaders.

“Federal funding is the largest single source of revenue for the University of Wisconsin-Madison,” explained Mike Fahey, managing director of state and university relations at WFAA. “The active involvement of alumni and friends of UW-Madison in our advocacy efforts is crucial to the success of our university. The annual gathering of our best advocates in Washington, DC, is an important component of WFAA’s overall advocacy strategy.”

Featured speakers:

Stephanie Diem, PhD, is an assistant professor of nuclear engineering and engineering physics at UW-Madison. Her research interests are in experimental plasma physics for fusion energy development. She focuses on using radio frequency waves to heat and drive current in magnetically confined plasmas. She is involved in the Pegasus-III experiment at UW-Madison, a new facility funded by the U.S. Department of Energy, studying innovations in plasma startup techniques in an effort to reduce the cost and complexity of future fusion power plants. Diem was a featured speaker at the 2022 White House summit Developing a Bold Decadal Vision for Commercial Fusion Energy, and she was selected by the National Academies as one of the 22 New Voices in Science, Engineering, and Medicine.

Charles Hoslet serves as vice chancellor for university relations at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. He is responsible for leading university efforts related to communications, marketing, and brand strategy as well as interactions with key stakeholders, including federal, state, local, and tribal government leaders; community organizations; business and industry; and visitors to campus. Hoslet currently serves on the board of directors for Destination Madison and the Wisconsin Alumni Association’s Alumni Advisory Council, and he has served previously on advisory boards for University Research Park and the Wisconsin Technology Council, among other organizations.
