[MADISON, WI] – On Monday, June 12, at 10:00am, the Milwaukee Alliance Against Racist and Political Repression and campaign partners will hold a press conference on the State St. side of the Wisconsin State Capitol. This press conference will be a response to the Shared Revenue proposal that is likely to pass through the State Assembly and Senate on Wednesday.

The Milwaukee Alliance condemns the current Shared Revenue proposal. The Wisconsin GOP, along with Mayor Cavalier Johnson and County Executive David Crowley, reached an agreement for the shared revenue bill for both the City of Milwaukee and Milwaukee County – which has strings attached. These strings are the following:

  • Eliminate the policy creation power from the Fire and Police Commission and require representatives from the fire and police departments to serve in the FPC
  • Reinstate police officers in Milwaukee Public Schools
  • Hire more police officers
  • Dedicate a portion of the sales tax to cover the police pension
  • No referendum on increased sales tax (total 2.9%)

In total, the Milwaukee Police Department will have to maintain 1,725 officers on its force as well as having only the Chief of Police being able to craft MPD policy – not the FPC. The issues of the fiscal cliff will be returning to haunt the City as we know it if this gets passed by the Wisconsin Legislature and Governor Tony Evers.

The Milwaukee Alliance condemns this attack on our democracy, the endangering of our youth, and the stripping away of the FPC’s ability to create policy. We stand firm in our demands:

  • Fair Shared Revenue with no strings attached
  • Hands off the Fire and Police Commission
  • No police in our schools
  • Transparency now! – Public Town Hall with Mayor Johnson and County Executive Crowley – No Backroom Deals!
  • Community control over resources – fund human needs

We will fight for this to not pass. We deserve a fair share revenue bill, as Milwaukee contributes the most to the State’s revenue – yet we get the least back. We call upon all to join us in our fight to make sure Milwaukee gets what it deserves.
