Joint Committee on Finance co-chairs: Statement on record-setting state revenue estimates

MADISON, WI – The Co-Chairs of the Joint Committee on Finance (JFC), State Representative Mark Born (R-Beaver Dam) and State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green) released the following statement related to the Department of Administration’s announcement of projected state revenues:

“Wisconsin is in an exceptional financial position because Republicans have steadily reformed and written responsible state budgets for the last 12 years. We have diligently worked to fund our priorities while protecting taxpayers.

“While we have a record-setting projected general fund balance, we must be mindful that the surplus is due, in part, to a massive increase in tax collections. This is not good news for taxpayers.

“The projected balance does not give the Governor a blank check as he puts together his budget proposal. Instead, it gives us flexibility to fund the programs and agencies that are necessary for prosperity in Wisconsin while cutting taxes to benefit all Wisconsin taxpayers.”
