GREEN BAY, Wis.—University of Wisconsin-Green Bay’s College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences (CAHSS, pronounced “cause”) is pleased to announce Common CAHSS returns to present, Truth: Information, Misinformation, and Democracy on Nov. 29-30, 2021 at the Weidner Center for the Performing Arts. The free, two-day event will take place in-person and virtually.
The third annual event, themed “Truth: Information, Misinformation, and Democracy” seeks to explore how higher educational institutions must not only generate and share information but also teach the critical information literacy skills required to navigate a complex terrain. Such skills are essential to democracy and to making progress on the key issues of our time, including human rights, racial justice, and sustainability.
“Common CAHSS will once again showcase the extraordinary talents of our students, faculty, and staff, and demonstrate how our college contributes to solving the world’s most pressing issues,” says Associate Dean of CAHSS) Ryan Martin. “The public’s difficulty in recognizing facts has had terrible consequences and we need to put our energy behind enhancing critical information literacy skills.”

The Truth is Out There: Conspiracy Theory and History” with Associate Prof. Clif Ganyard

Are we living in an age of conspiracy theories? With the prevalence of conspiracy theories – from COVID-19 to QAnon to “white replacement” to 9/11 – it may seem like we do. Ganyard (History, Humanities) will discuss conspiracy theories from an historical perspective and consider what, if anything, is different about our contemporary “post-truth” world.
Created in 2019, Common CAHSS (pronounced “cause”) is an annual event striving to generate awareness and conversation a thematic common cause—organized around interconnected local and global challenges that require collective solutions spanning disciplinary and geographic boundaries.
