La Pointe, WI. – Madeline Island Museum, one of the Wisconsin Historical Society’s 12 historic sites and museums, will reopen to the public on July 22, 2021. In addition to the daily experience offered Wednesday through Sunday every week through October 23, 2021, walking tours will be held on Wednesdays throughout the season. Madeline Island Museum also announced its annual holiday shopping event “Island Boutique” will take place on November 23, 2021.
“The Madeline Island team is excited to once again open our doors to guests,” said Keldi Merton, Madeline Island Museum site director. “We know the community and visitors are eager to engage with us again, and staff have planned carefully to ensure guests have an enjoyable experience when they visit this season.”
Madeline Island Museum is a rare place where history truly comes alive for all who pass through its doors. It was first opened to the public by Leo and Bella Capser in 1958 and was donated to the Wisconsin Historical Society in the late 1960s. The daily experience begins with a brief musical film introducing the history of the island before guests continue on to the Capser Center Gallery featuring the exhibit “Wiigwaazii: The Evolving Traditions of Birch,” developed in collaboration with artists Pat Kruse and Terri Hom. Guests then proceed to explore four log buildings filled with the history of the island from pre-European contact to the mid-1900’s.
The “Lost La Pointe Walking Tour” offers an opportunity to view the town through the eyes of those who lived and worked in La Pointe through past centuries. Offered every Wednesday afternoon from July 28 through September 1, 2021, the tour explores stories from history that shaped the island into the unique destination it is today. Pre-registration is required and tickets cost $5 for children ages 5-12, and $10 for adults and seniors.
