Fox Cities Chamber: Smart Girls Rock event offers expanded virtual format to showcase STEM careers to local female students

APPLETON, Wis. (September 28, 2020) – In an effort to inspire young women to engage in local STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) career pathways, the Fox Cities Chamber is providing the sixth annual Smart Girls Rock event in November. Due to the impact of COVID-19, the event is going virtual and will be available to all high school female students who want to explore interactive experiences with female mentors working in STEM careers and industries throughout the Fox Cities region.

This year’s virtual event will be expanded to three days instead of one. Each day will feature four different mentor presentations in a single STEM category. With registration, students will have complete access to all three days and the opportunity to participate in a variety of interactive sessions via Zoom with women who have achieved their educational and career goals in STEM. Students will also receive an electronic booklet with mentor biographies, recommended coursework and extra-curricular activities, and post-secondary education or training needed for each featured STEM career.

Smart Girls Rock also highlights regional STEM employers, as well as the career pathways, projects, and talents of Fox Cities’ women in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math. The purpose of the program is to inspire, promote and support regional female high school students with their academic and career planning in high demand STEM occupations. The intended impact of this program is to increase awareness and knowledge of STEM occupations in the Fox Cities and access to diverse mentors who can provide on-going support to students.

The cost per student for this event is ten dollars, and the teacher or school will need to register students as a group (e.g., class, school, grade, etc.). There can be multiple teachers registering students (separately) from each school. Students will participate through a link sent to their school email address. Throughout the event and after the event, students will have the opportunity to connect with over 20 women mentors in STEM-related professions.

Smart Girls Rock is made possible through the generous support of our event sponsors, including: presenting sponsor – Menasha Corporation; platinum sponsor – Miller Electric Mfg. Co; and in partnership with 4imprint and Fox Valley Technical College.
