Sturgeon Bay, WI (November 16, 2020) – Three organizations in Door County have been selected to receive a 2020 Cellcom Green Gift, including Crossroads at Big Creek, Open Door Bird Sanctuary and Door County Land Trust.
Crossroads at Big Creek manages 200 acres across three properties for preservation, environmental education and recreation. The organization received a $1,000 Green Gift from Cellcom to support repairs of the Meadow Trail, which suffered damage during heavy rains this year. Repairs will return the trail to an accessible state for guests with mobility-assist equipment and strollers. Work is slated to be completed in the spring of 2021.
Open Door Bird Sanctuary aims is to provide permanent homes for injured birds of prey not able to be released back into the wild. With these ambassadors, Open Door offers educational opportunities to inspire people of all ages. The organization received a $1,500 Green Gift from Cellcom to support construction of a new aviary, which will house four additional birds and allow for program growth.
Door County Land Trust works to protect Door County’s land and water, preserving land that contributes to the ecological integrity of the county. The organization received a $500 Green Gift from Cellcom for ongoing improvement projects. Door County Land Trust nature preserves have been busier than ever with the pandemic, which has increased the need for monitoring and maintenance.
“This year we’re particularly proud to support organizations dedicated to the preservation of the environment and wildlife habitats. Being outdoors can provide a strong boost to our mental wellbeing, which has been an important outlet for many throughout the pandemic,” said Cindy Durand, director of public affairs at Cellcom. “There are so many amazing experiences available in Northeastern and Central Wisconsin to connect with nature and learn more about sustainability. We’re proud to support organizations that are giving families the opportunity to expand their roles as environmental stewards.” A total of 31 green organizations received a share of the $36,040 in Green Gifts from Cellcom this year. The Green Gifts program uses funds generated from Cellcom’s cell phone recycling program to fund green nonprofit initiatives. Customers and community members can bring in their old or unwanted phones to be reused and recycled. Cellcom sends the phones to recyclers who in return send money to Cellcom for the materials that were saved from the phones. Cellcom’s Green Gift program completes the green cycle that starts with consumers being environmentally conscious and donating their devices.
