(December 8, 2020) APPLETON, Wis. – Consolidated Construction Co., Inc., a full-service design/build firm in Appleton, is being recognized for having produced one of Wisconsin’s most impressive and unique construction projects in 2020.
The Midwest Refrigerated Services Target Building Adaptive Reuse Project in Milwaukee received a Gold Projects of Distinction Award from Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) of Wisconsin for construction excellence.
The projects receiving ABC honors were judged in a rigorous process by a panel of construction experts based on a number of criteria, including safety, quality, owner satisfaction, project execution and coordination, budgeting, difficult and unusual challenges, and overall distinctiveness.
“ABC members do amazing work for clients in areas like manufacturing, hospitality, healthcare, and education,” said John Mielke, ABC of Wisconsin president. “We appreciate when our members are willing to have independent, third-party judges evaluate their work, so we have the opportunity to recognize their professional construction services that stand among the best anywhere.”
Midwest Refrigerated Services (MRS) Target Building Adaptive Reuse Project Details:
Rising crime rates, disinvestment by large retailers, and the growth of northern suburbs led to the precipitous economic decline on the northwest side of Milwaukee since the early 2000s. One such retailer was Target, which shuttered and abandoned its store in 2016.
The Consolidated Construction project team renovated and converted the vacant 122,720-square-foot store to house a cold storage warehouse, distribution center, loading docks, office spaces, workstations, lounges, training facilities, and a fulfillment center. This was a highly unusual conversion, as the typical strategy would be to build separate structures for the cold storage and conditioned spaces. Consolidated Construction’s design-build team—working in lockstep with MRS—was able to see beyond the original Target store configuration, and create a plan to adapt the facility to meet the owner’s specific needs.
This successful collaboration is more than just a rejuvenation of an abandoned property. It represents a long-term investment and commitment on the part of MRS to the surrounding community. The new facility has created more than 100 new, competitive-paying jobs in this economically challenged area, and has become an integral part of the success story taking place in and around this transitional neighborhood. The project was completed with a perfect safety record.
