MADISON – The University of Wisconsin-Madison is once again ranked high in the Academic Ranking of World Universities, improving its position both internationally and nationally.

The analysis, conducted by Shanghai Jiao Tong University, ranks UW-Madison 27th in the world and 19th in the U.S. That’s up one spot internationally from last year and two spots nationally.

UW-Madison is the second-highest ranked Big Ten school, behind only the University of Michigan.

Rankings are based on alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, research performance, highly cited researchers and papers published in Nature and Science, articles indexed in the Thomson Reuters Science Citation Index Expanded and Social Sciences Citation Index, and per capita performance related to the size of an institution.

Since 2003, ARWU has presented the top universities annually based on transparent methodology and third-party data. This year, a ranking of the best 1,000 universities in the world was published.

UW-Madison also performed well earlier this month in a separate analysis conducted by the Center for World University Rankings. UW-Madison ranked 25th worldwide, up from 27th last year.
