Friday, May 19, 2017, is an exciting day for Independent Living, Inc. On this spring day, guests will join the long-time area nonprofit in celebrating the construction launch of a much-needed senior living community on Madison’s northeast side.

Tennyson Senior Living Community will be built at 1936 Tennyson Lane. It will offer independent and assisted living apartments, memory care residence, and services. Another feature will be a Health and Wellness Center with a unique warm-water therapy pool.

Joyce Behrend, CEO at Independent Living, Inc., says, “We’re very excited to begin construction of Tennyson Senior Living Community. We’re looking forward to being a great neighbor and great resource serving the needs of seniors.”

The new community on Tennyson Lane is near Warner Park. For the convenience of guests, a groundbreaking ceremony will be hosted at Warner Park at noon on Friday, May 19. Dignitaries and invited guests will have a short outdoor program, followed by an indoor reception with refreshments in the Warner Park Community Recreation Center.

Rita Giovannoni, project development director and former CEO at Independent Living, Inc., has been diligently shepherding this project for several years. “It’s a thrill to see the hopes and dreams of so many seniors finally realized with this groundbreaking event. It’s going to be fun watching these walls take shape, and eventually become the new home for many seniors.”

Tennyson Senior Living Community will be built in phases on an eight-acre parcel. A four-story residence will be built first with adjacent community spaces, totaling 90,000 square feet. The community spaces include the main entrance, dining and café areas, living room and library space, and business offices. The residence will offer 24 apartments on the upper two floors, and 36 memory care and assisted living studios on the first two floors. The new Health and Wellness Center will occupy the lower level. Due to the hillside location, the Health and Wellness Center will have its own lower level entrance.

With an anticipated opening in the spring of 2018, the project was designed by Engberg Anderson Architects. The plans include underground parking, outdoor terrace, enclosed garden and a street-facing orchard. The third and flour-floor apartments will have individual heating and cooling, in-unit washer and dryer, and patios or balconies. The construction manager for this project is CG Schmidt.

Independent Living, Inc. has experience building and managing senior living communities. The organization built McKee Park Apartments, which opened in 1995 in Fitchburg; developed Olympic Village Retirement Community in Sun Prairie, which opened in 1997; and acquired a senior housing property on Segoe Road in Madison in 2000, which was renamed The Gardens independent living community and Segoe Gardens assisted living. Independent Living also operated one of the area’s first assisted living communities, Chandler HOME, from 1986 to 2000.
