MADISON – Dr. Giulio Tononi, an internationally renowned sleep researcher, will become the new director of the Center for Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research at UW-Madison.

His appointment is effective April 1, 2016.

Tononi, professor of psychiatry at UW School of Medicine and Public Health, received his medical and doctoral degrees at the University of Pisa and the Scuola Superiore, respectively. In partnership with his long-standing collaborator, Dr. Chiara Cirelli, he has made seminal contributions to the development of a comprehensive hypothesis regarding the function of sleep -applying genetic, molecular, and electrophysiological approaches to the testing and refinement of this theoretical framework. He is also an internationally recognized leader in the study of consciousness, which will become a stronger focus for the Center.

The Center for Sleep Medicine and Sleep Research facilitates and enhances both basic and clinical sleep research and promotes the development of new technologies for the study of sleep and sleep problems.
