Pharmacy School Announces Continuing Education Collaboration for Pharmacy Techs

MADISON – Bringing credibility, expertise, and opportunities for career progression to the growing field of pharmacy technicians, the UW-Madison School of Pharmacy, Division of Pharmacy Professional Development (DPPD) will be a recognized continuing education partner for Rx Tech Prep.

Based in Illinois, Rx Tech Prep expanded to Madison in June 2015 and offers a concentrated 11-week course that prepares students to enter the field of pharmacy as a technician as well as take the national exam to become certified pharmacy technicians. Bridging the learning needs of pharmacy technicians with the life-long learning principles of the School of Pharmacy’s professional development division is a win-win for one of the fastest growing sectors of the health care arena.

Pharmacy Technicians are in great demand, which the U.S. Department of Labor’s Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts will grow by 31 percent between its 2008 level and 2018.

The coursework provided by DPPD will meet the continuing education requirements outlined by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), the national agency for the accreditation of professional degree programs in pharmacy and providers of continuing pharmacy education. “While the pharmacy technician certification is above what the law requires in Wisconsin, this collaboration embraces the lifecycle of the learners needs,” says Erik Burns, Ed.D. MBA, clinical assistant professor. “Our resources and expertise have an opportunity to support their current education and impact their future career progression in the field of pharmacy.”

Partnering with DPPD completes the learning-needs of Rx Tech Prep students by providing these lifelong learners with CE options that explicitly meet their needs, no matter where they are in this growing field. “This partnership integrates solutions for our students beginning from entry preparation into pharmacy, as well as the continuation of professional development.” says, Isabella Rodriguez, Pharm D, Rph. President of Rx Tech Prep.

DPPD has over 60 years of experience in assessing learning needs, developing educational programs to meet those needs, and conducting professional development and continuing programs throughout the US and internationally to enhance the knowledge/skills within the drug development and manufacturing industry, as well as within the area of practicing pharmacists and clinical care setting. In addition, DPPD is the largest academic provider of pharmacy continuing education and professional development in the US. Collaborative continuing education classes are scheduled to begin this Spring, and Rx Tech Prep will begin their pharmacy technician classes February 22nd.
