60 Objects for 60 Years Exhibit Opens at National Railroad Museum

Ashwaubenon (Green Bay, Wis.) – National Railroad Museum opens new exhibit featuring 60 unique items from the Museum’s collection.

2016 marks the 60th Anniversary for the National Railroad Museum. As part of the celebration, the newest exhibit features
60 unique items from the Museum’s collection. Located in the Fuller Gallery, 60 Objects for 60 Years opens to the public January 30, 2016.

The archives at the Museum are filled with items from railroad history. Some of the unique and interesting objects featured include:

A Macrame art piece from the Kansas City Southern Corporate Office

A velocipede car, used to move railroad workers from one site on the rails to another

Hotel and dining cookbook used by the Union Pacific Railroad

A locomotive explosion photo from 1920

Pieces of railroad china

The items that will be available to view in the new exhibit are items that are not often in the forefront of the Museum. “Highlighting unusual objects that are rarely displayed at the Museum, 60 Objects for 60 Years is not only an exhibit about cultural history, but an exhibit celebrating the community’s support and history with our organization”, states Jacqueline D. Frank, executive director. “The National Railroad Museum is the only nationally designated Museum in Wisconsin and our vibrancy and growth may be attributed to local and national communities coming together with object donations and other types of support.”

Founded in 1956, the National Railroad Museum was designated as a national museum by a Joint Act of Congress in 1958. Growth has continued over the years with the addition of the Bauer Gallery and the Lenfestey Center, which houses locomotives such as the Dwight D Eisenhower command car and the Union Pacific Big Boy. Further building expansion is planned for 2020.

Just as the history of the Museum is varied and unique, the objects within the 60 Object for 60 Years exhibit are as well. They give a hint of the 100,000+ objects within the Museum’s collection, telling the story of the organization over the past 60 years as well depicting the unique and far-reaching cultural influences of the railroad since its inception.
