Greater Oshkosh: Employment experiences more gains

April 27th, 2016: The Oshkosh-Neenah MSA monthly unemployment rate decreased to 4.3 percent in March from 4.8 percent in March 2015, according to figures released from the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development. Wisconsin’s unemployment rate dropped down to 5.0 percent in March from a revised 5.3 percent from March 2015. The U.S. unemployment rate was 5.0 percent in March. Total employment in the Oshkosh-Neenah MSA jumped to 88,665 in March from 86,569 in March 2015 (a 2.4 percent increase).

Data show that nearly all MSAs in the state of Wisconsin experienced a drop in their unemployment rate from the previous month. The Oshkosh-Neenah MSA is tied for the third lowest unemployment rate (along with Appleton and Fond du Lac). Only Madison and Sheboygan are lower.

All in all, ‘Manufacturing’ accounts for two-thirds of the Oshkosh-Neenah MSA private sector employment growth in the past year. Manufacturing employment is up by 3.6 percent in the past year. Additionally, employment in the ‘Retail’ (+0.7 percent), ‘Financial Activities’ (+2.4 percent), and ‘Construction’ (+9.5 percent) sectors have also grown.
