Madison – The Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) is making it easier to report fraud in the state’s Worker’s Compensation (WC) program.
DWD has launched a new online complaint form to submit tips and potential instances of abuse of the WC system by workers, employers, insurers and providers. The form follows Governor Scott Walker’s signing of legislation earlier this year authorizing a special prosecutor for WC fraud.
“Under Governor Walker’s leadership, we continue to seek new ways to support the integrity of all DWD programs, including Worker’s Compensation,” DWD Secretary Ray Allen said. “A Worker’s Compensation system that supports safer workplaces and a quicker return to work while making it harder to cheat is one that provides value to all Wisconsinites.”
Governor Walker signed 2015 Wisconsin Act 180, which made several changes to the WC system including funds to support a position at the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate and prosecute WC fraud. The act follows the agreed-upon bill, which was advanced by the Worker’s Compensation Advisory Council and passed by the Legislature.
Under the new law, citizens and stakeholders can contact DWD through the new portal to report suspected fraud. If upon investigation the evidence provides a reasonable basis that WC fraud occurred, DWD will refer the case to the Wisconsin DOJ for possible prosecution.
The WC Division administers programs designed to ensure that injured workers receive required benefits from insurers or self-insured employers; encourage rehabilitation and reemployment for injured workers; and promote the reduction of work-related injuries, illnesses, and deaths.
More information about the Worker’s Compensation Division, including instructions on completing the form to report suspected fraud, is available online.
