Wisconsin Innovation Network: Let the funding flow: Learn about the launch of the Badger Fund of Funds at Sept. 22 WIN-Madison

The launch of Wisconsin’s new venture capital fund called Badger Fund of Funds will be unveiled at the Tuesday, Sept. 22 meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network’s in Madison.

The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for WIN members, $35 for non-members and included with WIN corporate memberships.

The Badger Fund of Funds will leverage $25 million in state of Wisconsin investment dollars with dollars from private limited partners as well as the fund’s general partners. Established as a new partnership, the Badger Fund of Funds has deep state roots in Kegonsa Capital Partners in Fitchburg, led by veteran investor Ken Johnson. Its partner is Sun Mountain Capital, which is based in Santa Fe, N.M., and which manages similar funds in other states and provinces. Brian Birk is managing director of Sun Mountain Capital.

Badger Fund of Funds Green (2) Utilizing state and private dollars, Badger Fund of Funds will create regional “recipient” funds across Wisconsin to invest in seed-stage, Wisconsin-based companies. Investments will focus on what the fund’s managers describe as a “Money for Minnows” strategy to better support the state’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.

“We’re looking forward to hearing about the Badger Fund of Funds organization, its private partners and possible recipient funds across the state,” said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council.

“The launch of the fund comes at a time when investment activity in Wisconsin is already on the rise, as evidenced by our latest Wisconsin Portfolio, which tracked 113 investments exceeding $346 million in 2014. We expect the Badger Fund of Funds will add to that activity,” Still added.
