BioForward Calls for Legislation that Preserves a Path for Life-Saving Treatments

MADISON Wis., Sept. 4, 2015 —BioForward today called for the Wisconsin Legislature to pursue a legislative alternative that will preserve bioscience research in Wisconsin. By preserving the access that researchers have to existing cell lines, the authors have made strides towards preserving a path in Wisconsin for scores of potential life-saving treatments. However, the revised legislation introduced today by Rep. Andre Jacque, R-DePere and Rep. Joel Kleefisch, R-Oconomowoc, as Assembly Substitute Amendment 1 to Assembly Bill 305, does not fully achieve this goal.

“We cannot support this bill as it was amended today because it does not address all the issues related to research in Wisconsin,” said Lisa Johnson, CEO of BioForward.

“BioForward supports a legislative alternative that preserves research. Our companies provide over 100,000 direct and indirect private sector jobs in Wisconsin. But, more importantly, the quality and dedication of our research institutions is what brings life-saving treatments to the patients who need them. We fear that if this critical research leaves our state, then our companies will follow.”

There is no doubt that the use of fetal tissue and fetal cells for medical research is challenging and requires the highest ethical standards. But, there is a better option than simply criminalizing the research that is done in Wisconsin.

“We urge you to choose a legislative response that also preserves a path for life-saving research to continue in the State of Wisconsin,” said Ms. Johnson.

“We know that this research is being done with respect, dignity and integrity. Support legislation that brings Wisconsin to the forefront in the nation as a leader in a commitment to unparalleled ethics.”
