Appleton, Wis. – Did you know that most identity theft crimes occur when something containing your personal information is lost or stolen? Protecting yourself from identity theft is in your own hands. If you don’t need it, shred it – responsibly!

Bring your personal documents to BBB ShredFest, to be held Saturday, September 26th, 2015 at Thrivent Financial, 2000 E. Milestone Drive in Appleton (located directly across the street from the entrance to Thrivent’s main campus on Ballard Road) from 8:30 am to 11 am. There is a limit of three paper bags per car. Thrivent and Arms, Inc. are co-sponsoring the event.

The event is part of a larger, national shredding event hosted by BBB offices throughout the United States. Many BBB offices – including the Wisconsin BBB – host shredding events twice annually. The BBB shredded more than 87,600 pounds of material at our Spring ShredFest events.

“We invite people to join us in protecting their identities by shredding unwanted, personal, financial and confidential documents,” said Ran Hoth, CEO/president of the BBB Serving Wisconsin. “Identity theft is a serious crime and shredding personal documents is an important first step in identity theft protection. Thanks to our sponsors, we’re able to offer this free service.”

According to the Federal Trade Commission, identity theft is the nation’s number one complaint. One of the most common methods used by thieves to steal personal information is dumpster diving, which entails rummaging through trash looking for old bills and other documents containing personal information.
