Greenbush – On Saturday and Sunday, May 17-18, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., visitors to the Wade House historic site in Greenbush will have the opportunity to help the site get ready for spring during the annual “At Work and At Play” event. Guests will help prepare the 1850s stagecoach hotel for the summer season by engaging in multiple, hands-on spring chores.
On the side lawns of Wade House quilts will be aired out, and ticks, coarse cotton mattresses, will be filled with straw. A vegetable garden will be planted using heirloom seeds. On Saturday morning, the site’s Merino-Cotswold sheep will be shorn of their winter coats. While inside the 27-room hotel, the cast-iron stove will be blacked to prevent rusting, and the floors of all the rooms will be swept.
During “At Work & At Play”, a vegetable garden will be planted using heirloom seeds. Costumed staff will plant peas, beans, corn, turnips, carrots and cabbage.
On Sunday afternoon, once the spring chores have been completed, guests will have a chance to take in the sights and sounds of vintage base ball at 1:30 p.m. when the Wade House Red Jackets kick off their season with an 1860s-style pick-up game, which will include an opportunity for guests to play.
Visitors will begin the special experience at the new Wade House Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum, located at W7965 State Highway 23. Admission is: adults $11; students/seniors $9.25; children (5-17) $5.50; family (up to two adults and two or more dependent children 5-17) $30. For more information about the event, please call Bridgitt Zielke, Wade House manager of marketing, public programs and event services at 920-526-3271.
