Eagle, Wis.–Old World Wisconsin will provide opportunities for guests to experience what life was like on the home front and in soldiers’ camps during the War Between the States at “Civil War Encounters.” The monthlong event runs August 1 through September 1, 2014.

Guests will be able to help a soldier raise a tent, try on clothing of the period, shoulder a reproduction rifle and play games that citizens would have played to pass the time. On weekends, additional activities include a changing assortment of relief efforts from the homefront, plus a special “Gone for a Soldier” Weekend August 23-24.

Jennifer Van Haaften, associate director, programs and historical resources, shared: “Although not a battleground state, Wisconsin played an important role in the Civil War. In addition to raising over 91,000 soldiers (eleven percent of the population) for the war effort, the work of those on the home front sending supplies and relief efforts was also great. Our guests have told us they appreciate the opportunity for this type of close-up, hands-on experience.”

On Saturday and Sunday, August 23-24, the “Gone for a Soldier” Weekend brings dozens of re-enactors on site from the 2nd Wisconsin Volunteer Infantry, a part of the famed Iron Brigade that made history during battles at Antietam, Second Bull Run and Gettysburg. During the weekend’s activities, spread across the crossroads village, guests can go through the process of enlisting, drilling and marching. Rifle firing and artillery demonstrations, happening periodically throughout the day, bring the front that much closer.
