MILWAUKEE — From photos with a life-size image of new Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and games of human Jenga to a full day of networking and job connections involving almost 80 area businesses, students and the community are invited to celebrate National Engineers Week at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee (UWM), Feb. 16-21.
Engineering Week is about celebrating problem solving and innovation through collaboration, technology and hard work. UWM students are finding a straight path to the talent pipeline through their work on campus and applied research with UWM’s varied business connections.
A recent TE Connectivity Ltd. survey found most Americans commonly associate innovation and invention in society with engineers (87 percent), compared to other prominent and impactful professions such as teaching (77 percent), medicine (73 percent), and others. With more than 1,600 engineering students (70 percent of whom stay in Wisconsin after graduation), UWM is helping develop the state’s innovation infrastructure.
UWM Engineers Week activities include:
Nadella “Photo Op” – Monday, February 17, 10 a.m.
Kulwicki Student Center, first floor of the Engineering-Mathematical Science building, 3200 N. Cramer St.
Dean Brett Peters will kick off Engineers Week with free Red Bull and a brief presentation next to a life-size photo of UWM alum Satya Nadella, recenty named Microsoft CEO. All week students can take “selfies” next to the photo and answer the question, “Where will you be tomorrow?” on the Wall of Inspiration in the Kulwicki Center or on one of the easels featuring Nadella’s image that are located throughout the college.
Egg Drop – Monday, February 17, 6-8 p.m.
Alan Kulwicki Memorial Student Center. Participants will build a capsule for an egg out of recycled material, then test their creations. Prizes will be awarded to the most durable.
Metal Casting – Tuesday, February 18, 6-8 p.m.
Kulwicki Student Center & W320. Students will learn about metal casting and how it is used in industry, then get hands-on experience designing and creating innovative objects.
Human Jenga – Thursday, February 20, 6-8 p.m.
Kulwicki Student Center. Engineering students and prospective students will learn about precision by playing Jenga with real life linemen, utility workers and construction personal.
Industry Expo – Friday, February 21, 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Union Ballroom. Some 78 local and global companies will host information exhibits about internships, co-operative education opportunities and full-time jobs.
About National Engineers Week: National Engineers Week is dedicated to ensuring a diverse and well-educated future engineering workforce by increasing understanding of and interest in engineering and technology careers. The event was started in 1951 by the National Society of Professional Engineers in conjunction with the birthday of President George Washington, considered as the nation’s first engineer. It is observed by more than 70 engineering, education, and cultural societies, along with more than 50 corporations and government agencies.
