UpFront: CEO says hospitals focused on better care

Froedtert Health President & CEO Cathy Jacobson says hospitals are dealing with continued uncertainty given the full rollout of the federal health care law but are focused on long-term goals of delivering better care at lower costs.

“I always tell folks it’s not a question of if we’re going to change, it’s a question of when, how fast and how deep it’s going to happen when it does,” she said on “UpFront with Mike Gousha,” produced in partnership with WisPolitics.com. “Our health care system in the United States is too costly. It needs to move toward a value equation based on quality and cost. The question is, ‘How fast do we have to be able to turn this ship to get it there before other forces really drive us to get there?’”

Wisconsin is in a good position to make changes in the way care is delivered, she said, because of its high level of hospital consolidation and alignment of physicians.

“We can work together with our physicians on how to redesign care,” Jacobson said. “Other states are trying to get physicians on board; they’re with us already.

“And so we’re already talking about how do we change things. We’ve been able to effect a lot of change. And I think that’s great for Wisconsin.”
