Union Cab Cooperative of Madison Receives Recognition as a Green Master in Wisconsin Green Masters Program

Madison, WI (December, 2014) – Union Cab Cooperative has been recognized as a Green Master in the 2014 Green Masters Program established by the Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council! As a Green Master, Union Cab Cooperative joins a select group of companies scoring in the top 20% of the program. Each of these companies was introduced at the 7th Annual Wisconsin Sustainable Business Council Conference.

Union Cab is a worker-owned and operated taxi cooperative that provides direct meter and parcel delivery service to south-central Wisconsin. The members of Union Cab Cooperative embrace the Core Value: “We are dedicated to operating our cooperative in an environmentally responsible way.” Putting action to the words, the Green Team has been monitoring, measuring and acting to reduce their environmental footprint since 2009.

“Union Cab has been engaged in our program for the last four years,” said Tom Eggert, Executive Director of the WI Sustainable Business Council. “They are currently the highest scoring company within our Transportation sector, and provide an excellent example for others in their industry on the path to sustainability.”

Union Cab Cooperative also engages in educational outreach to both their members and their community. As Union Cab strives toward cleaner energy, and looks to upgrade their existing 5kWh solar array, they are concerned about policies and pricing that makes solar less profitable.

“We joined the Green Masters program as a way of challenging ourselves to improve,” says Kate Schachter, driver and Green Team member of Union Cab Cooperative. “By comparing our practices with other companies in Wisconsin and checking our performance through the Green Masters program, we find new ways to support our business with a Profit, People, Planet outlook.”

Alana McKeever, Program Director of the Green Masters Program responded, “This is exactly what we want from businesses in Wisconsin! And it’s companies like Union Cab, pushing the boundaries ever further within our Transportation sector, that set the bar for others to get creative and engaged in finding ways to incorporate profitable sustainability into their business practices.”

Applicants to the Green Masters Program are judged on a comprehensive range of sustainability actions, from energy to water use to educational outreach and governance. More than 175 Wisconsin businesses are participating in the program where the top twenty percent achieve the highest “Green Master” designation.
