DE PERE, WIS: A team from Texas Tech University collaborated to win the iOme challenge, this national retirement-preparedness competition for college students.
The Texas Tech team won $10,000-plus an all-expense-paid trip to Washington, D.C. They will present their winning report to members of Congress and other policy makers at a Women’s Institute for a Secure Retirement (WISER) forum on April 2, 2014. Dr. Sandra Huston – who served as the team’s faculty adviser – also earned a cash prize of $2,000; she will accompany her winning team to Washington.
“This is the second win for Texas Tech [last time was in 2011] and we are thrilled to see them continue to compete in our challenge, delivering new solutions to told problems and breaking into new frontiers in financial security and behavioral change,” said Adi Redzic, iOme’s executive director.
For the first time in the history of the challenge, judges awarded a special recognition to Utah Valley University for their outstanding video submission. The team will share a $2,500 prize.

A nonprofit, iOme (I-owe-me) was established in 2009 with the vision and leadership of several community leaders in Green Bay, Wis., and with the financial support of PAi (Plan Administrators Inc.) of De Pere, Wis. Dr. David G. Wegge, professor of political science and executive director of the Strategic Research Institute at St. Norbert College, De Pere, Wis., serves as chair of iOme board of directors.
Each year, iOme, Inc. conducts its contest to challenge college students to change the world by investing in their financial security. In addition, iOme conducts annual studies of the Millennial generation (The Measure of Millennials) and facilitates the Money Smart Week video contest in collaboration with the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago.
iOme is a national movement to teach financial literacy through engagement of college students and Millennials at large. Its main challenge is to inspire and empower Millennials to build their individual (iOme) and their collective financial futures (weOus).
Finalists in the iOme Challenge were judged and a winner selected by a blue-ribbon panel of experts including; Dr. Angela Lyons, associate professor and director of the Center for Economic and Financial Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and former consultant to the U.S. Department of the Treasury, Office of Financial Education; Dr. Michael Price, associate professor of economics in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State University and a faculty research fellow at the National Bureau of Economic Research; and Ms. Laura Schwartz, former White House director of events in the Clinton administration and author of “Eat, Drink & Succeed.”
