Local 3D foam company builds 26 foot scale model of civil war cannon

Patrick Berndt, General Manager of Sign Works, announced the completion of an extra-large scale model of a civil war era cannon. This 3d prop is built of EPS StyroFoam and hard coated. The wheels are 12 feet high, the barrel 26 feet long and 44” inches in diameter. While the cannon is not a working model with ammunition, the wheels are functional. The model was engineered to disassemble for shipment in a semi-trailer that will deliver the unit to New York’s, Grand Central Station. Then, pass through a 5 foot door to be reassembled for display.

John Moder, owner of Sign Works and 3dyourbrand.com said, “This is just one example of the capabilities that will allow us to compete on the national stage for props and 3d imagery.” Disaster turned opportunity caused Sign Works to enter the national market with these sizable works of art. In 2013, a storm destroyed most of the contents of the Sign Works retail facility on College Ave in Appleton. But, the highly technical electronic equipment that cuts 3 dimensional EPS foam survived. This created the opportunity for John to move his foam business to a facility capable of handling large projects. John also stated, “Our expertise extends to anything 3 dimensional with structural integrity while being light weight. In fact we recently shipped a 16 foot diameter, 8 foot high flying saucer to New York for a store display. We can build monument signs, 3d billboards, props and even architectural accessories like spires, cornices, stones and brick wraps for posts. The list is only defined by our client’s needs.” Sign works long term goal is to be a player on the national market creating new jobs for creative people fulfilling orders for the film industry and advertising agencies coast to coast. We are one of only three companies in the entire Midwest with the equipment and the talent to produce pieces of this size and quality.
