Hoffman selected to lead the project
(Appleton, WI) The Berlin Area School District has selected Hoffman Planning, Design & Construction, Inc. to design and build a new middle school onto the existing high school and address space needs at the District’s elementary school.
“Portions of the existing middle school are very old, structurally unsound, with obsolete mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems, along with obstacles to accessibility,” stated Catherine Cruickshank, senior project designer with Hoffman. “Our goal is to develop a new middle school that provides a 21st century learning environment and operational efficiency, including sharing areas of the high school like the cafeteria and elective classrooms and workshops.”
The project includes expanding the overcrowded Clay Lamberton elementary school. “A kindergarten addition will enable programs including speech therapy, guidance, and physical therapy to move out of undersized rooms and inappropriate spaces such as hallways and locker rooms,” Cruickshank stated.
Improvements to both schools include creating secure day-time visitor entrances as well as adding a wrestling room and enlarged fitness center to shared areas of the high school.
“We are pleased to be working with Hoffman on this project after such a successful referendum effort,” stated Bob Eidahl, school superintendent. “Their decades of experience working with Wisconsin school districts have formed a solid understanding of how to create innovative learning environments that support modern teaching methods and provide operational efficiencies. We are confident that Hoffman will help us develop a true school campus that will benefit our students and community for years to come.”
The $18.7 million project is currently in design; construction will begin in early spring of 2014. The elementary school addition and remodeling at the high school will be ready by fall 2014 and the middle school is expected to be completed by the start of the 2015-2016 school year.
