Dane County ranks second in the state for tourism spending

(Madison, WI) In celebration of National Travel and Tourism Week May 3-11 2014, the Greater Madison Convention and Visitor’s Bureau (GMCVB) wants to acknowledge the key role of tourism as an economic driver. The latest important economic information released by the Wisconsin Department of Tourism clearly shows that travel and tourism brings additional dollars to the Greater Madison economy.

All 2013 measures of the Madison area’s tourism industry indicate healthy growth in volume of visitors coming to the destination. “We are very pleased with this year’s data. Dane County has seen positive growth in all key sectors that we monitor including increases in visitor spending and visitor volume. These figures mean that we are reaching the right targets. We are acutely aware of the competitive nature of our business and are thrilled for the Greater Madison area to have fared well in 2013,” says Deb Archer, President and CEO of the GMCVB.

Dane County has seen a 7% increase in tourism dollars spent in our region as compared to last year. Currently, Dane County is ranked 2nd in the state in tourism expenditure.

Travel is big business in Dane County. The GMCVB reports tourist spending at a healthy $1.8 billion in Dane County in 2013. This represents a continuing upward increase when compared to other years. Those dollars spent reflect an economic indicator of equal import– in Dane County, 19,857 (full time equivalent) jobs are supported directly by tourism according to Tourism Economics, the company commissioned by the state Department of Tourism.
