Madison – The Wisconsin Safety Council, the state’s leading provider of safety training and programming, and the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development (DWD) will honor Alliant Energy as one of 18 companies to win this year’s Wisconsin Corporate Safety award.

“We are proud to honor the deserving winning companies who work tirelessly to ensure safety remains a top priority, everyday” said Janie Ritter, director of the Wisconsin Safety Council. “The exhaustive efforts and determination of these companies to keep their employees safe at the workplace, as well as off the job, provides an example that all Wisconsin companies should strive to emulate.”

The winning companies provided details on their organization’s safety and health leadership, training and implementation programs, and employee participation. Their reports also included information on their safety accomplishments and goals. The applications were judged by an independent panel of 35 safety, health, and human resource professionals.

“I congratulate the 2012 Wisconsin Corporate Safety Award winners, who are helping Wisconsin maintain its competitive edge while setting an example for others as successful, profitable, forward-looking employers in making safety a priority for their workers,” DWD Secretary Reggie Newson said. “Governor Walker has introduced a bold set of workforce reforms to address the skills gap and equip workers with the right skills in the years ahead. Safety is paramount, as all of us work as partners in continuing efforts to protect our workers and move Wisconsin’s economy forward.”

Headquartered in Madison, Wisconsin, Alliant Energy provides domestic utility customers in the Midwest with electric and natural gas services. Alliant’s Executive Safety Leadership Team (ESLT) decided they needed to have a sense of urgency to get their employees attention and implemented “Rules to Live By” in 2012. Alliant believes their sense of urgency and refocusing of attention to the safety rules significantly contributed to their total recordable injuries being reduced by 46%, and lost time injuries by 76% from 2011.

The awards will be presented during the 71st Annual Wisconsin Safety and Health Conference at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells on April 23 and 24.

The Wisconsin Safety Council is an educational division of WMC, which is the state manufacturers’ association, and is the state chapter of the National Safety Council. Since 1923, WSC has been helping save the lives of Wisconsin workers and provides a network of more than 4,000 organizational members and professionals with training, certification, research, conference, resources, and community.
