Kids Bank run by kids, for kids

(Milwaukee) Students at the United Community Center’s Bruce-Guadalupe Middle School have honed their personal finance skills by working as employees of the school’s student bank. Yesterday, at a special event hosted by U.S. Bank and the Wisconsin Bankers Association (WBA), these students were recognized for their efforts and learned more about the banking industry.

“It’s important for individuals to learn about managing their finances early,” said Rose Oswald Poels, president/CEO of the Wisconsin Bankers Association. “This kind of hands-on experience is invaluable. I’m very honored to visit the UCC and talk with these dedicated students about the banking industry.”

During the event, Oswald Poels commended the students for their diligence and dedication to strong personal finance skills. She also answered questions from the students about careers in the banking industry and the link between banks and their communities.

Made possible through a partnership between the school, United Community Center and U.S. Bank, the student bank is staffed by student tellers, student security and a student Board of Directors, with faculty oversight. Since the bank opened in 2001, students have deposited almost $30,000 into savings accounts at the bank.
