WIN-Madison: Federal health reform effects on small business to be explored at Nov. 26 meeting

Federal health reform effects on small business to be explored at Nov. 26 WIN-Madison meeting

From website woes to political wrangling and evolving rules, problems associated with the Oct. 1 launch of the Affordable Care Act’s online exchange has left many small business owners and employees wondering: What should we do next, if anything?

Learn from an industry expert what the ACA means to small businesses, now and in coming months, at the Nov. 26 meeting of the Wisconsin Innovation Network in Madison.

The luncheon will be held at the Sheraton Hotel on Madison’s John Nolen Drive. Registration and networking begin at 11:30 a.m., lunch at noon and the presentation at 12:30 p.m. The cost is $25 for WIN members, $35 for non-members and included with WIN corporate memberships.

Al Wearing, chief insurance services officer with Group Health Cooperative of South Central Wisconsin, will outline the Affordable Care Act and how the health-care marketplace will work for individuals and small businesses through the new Small Business Health Options Program. A panel of entrepreneurs will follow up with comments and questions.

Wearing’s career in the Wisconsin health insurance industry included 30 years with Blue Cross & Blue Shield United of Wisconsin before joining Group Health Cooperative. His experience will prompt a consumer-friendly overview of ACA, the federal health care reform legislation.

“Group Health Cooperative’s status as an independent non-profit will allow for a frank, consumer-driven explanation of ACA and possible next steps for individuals and businesses, regardless of where they eventually turn for health care,” said Tom Still, president of the Wisconsin Technology Council. “That’s especially important for small companies, which may not be able to offer coverage now.”

WIN is the membership arm of the Tech Council, the independent, non-profit science and technology adviser to the governor and the Legislature. It has chapters in Milwaukee, Madison, Northeast Wisconsin, Central Wisconsin, the Lake Superior region and Western Wisconsin.
