MILWAUKEE – 3D Creations, a new company that is developing a mid-grade 3D scanner for hobbyists and entrepreneurs, was awarded the $7,500 grand prize in the New Venture Business Plan Competition at UWM’s Lubar School of Business, besting eight other finalists in the competition.
The scanner will generate 3D models and replicate items in conjunction with a desktop 3D printer.
Engineering students Jesse DePinto and Matthew Juranitch, and architecture alumnus Jing Bao (’12) make up the 3D Creations team. DePinto and Juranitch, whose product won the UWM Student Startup Challenge last semester, already own a small business selling and servicing 3D printers, which create objects out of resin by depositing ultrathin layers, one on top of another.
Earning the second place award was @Home Rehab, a remote patient monitoring system for in-home rehabilitation, led by computer science student Xiao Bing Huang and MBA student Hongping Zhu.
Two plans tied for third place: Modibook, a patent-pending, user-driven customization process to create original children’s books, was presented by political science student Scott Dettman and marketing student Jon Moze. Portable Green Steam, a mobile car wash service with steam technology that results in 98% water savings, was presented by Lubar business students Jacob Miller, Sean Nelson, Samantha Panella and Jordan Job, as well as engineering student Zachary Meulemans.
This is the sixth year of the New Venture competition, which was designed to foster entrepreneurial spirit among UWM students and alumni, promote practical business skills, and encourage the creation of new, for-profit ventures. It is made possible by private support from La Macchia Enterprises, the parent company of Mark Travel and Trisept Solutions.
Judges for this year’s competition included Alan Katz of Katz Consulting, Joe Kirgues of gener8tor, Brian Morello of Drink Beer LLC, Paul Stewart of PS Capital Partners and V. Kanti Prasad, Bostrom Professor of Entrepreneurship in the UWM Lubar School of Business.
