UW Researcher Wins Grant to Study Trauma-Caused Epilepsy
Madison, Wis. — Dr. Robert J. Kotloski, a neurophysiology fellow in the UW School of Medicine and Public Health, has received a 2013 American Brain Foundation fellowship to study the process by which a traumatic brain injury leads to post-traumatic epilepsy.
The work is especially important to veterans and others with
traumatic head injuries. Dr. Kotloski will study changes in brain activity within the hippocampus, a brain structure known to be important in epilepsy, during the period between a brain injury and the appearance of seizures. He hopes to discover electrographic biomarkers by that may predict whether the trauma will lead to epilepsy or recovery without seizures.
“I am grateful to receive this award in honor of Dr. Susan S. Spencer from the American Brain Foundation, American Epilepsy Society, and the Epilepsy Foundation,” Kotloski says. “This fellowship gives me an opportunity to advance this clinically important research.”
He also thanked Dr. Thomas Sutula, chair of neurology at UW SMPH, and Dr. Paul Rutecki, another UW epilepsy expert. Kotloski received his fellowship award at the American Academy of Neurology meeting in San Diego.
