Dane County’s largest private employer honored for top business performance

MADISON- University of Wisconsin Hospital and Clinics is one of six academic medical centers in the U.S. recognized for top performance in supply-chain management.

This is the sixth year that the University Healthsystem Consortium (UHC) has recognized the hospital, Dane County’s largest private employer, with the Supply Chain Performance Excellence Award.

Hospital representatives received the award last night at the University HealthSystem Consortium (UHC) annual conference in Atlanta. Supply-chain management encompasses all aspects of acquiring supplies and products from contracting to inventory to delivery to the patient. UHC measured performance in facility-wide supply use, major-department supply use, and financial stability.

“It is extraordinary that our hospital has been recognized six times in a row,” said Donna Katen-Bahensky, hospital CEO and president. “Patients and families see our clinical work every day, but they don’t often see the management decisions our staff make to derive the most value from every dollar we spend.”

UHC scored each participating medical center based on supply and drug expenses and operating margin. UW Hospital and Clinics ranked “substantially better” than the best quarter of participating hospitals in three of the six measurements.

With more than 7,000 employees, the hospital is the largest non-public employer in the county. This year alone, it was called the state’s top hospital by U.S. News & World Report and received national honors for workplace excellence, clinical quality and LGBT health care equality.
