Weltzin, M.D., F.A.E.D., F.A.P.A., the medical director of Eating Disorder Services at Rogers Memorial Hospital, discusses males and eating disorders during a segment of “Katie” on Tuesday, Nov. 19. A nationally syndicated talk show, “Katie” is hosted by award-winning journalist and TV personality Katie Couric and is scheduled to air locally on WISN in Milwaukee (2 p.m., CST) and WISC in Madison (4 p.m., CST).
The segment features Dr. Weltzin as the expert guest on the treatment and research of male eating disorders. “In my 20 years treating eating disorders, I have seen a significant increase in males, with more than half of the males we see at Rogers reporting body image and problematic exercise behaviors to change their self-perceived inadequacies,” Dr. Weltzin said.
Troy Roness, a nationally acclaimed writer and former patient at Rogers’ Eating Disorder Center, said he feels the show is an excellent opportunity to build awareness of this problem. He’s been an advocate for men struggling with eating disorders since his 2009 recovery from anorexia and a life-threatening addiction to exercise. “For many years, I didn’t recognize my own disease and it almost killed me,” he shared. “That’s why I’m glad to see this topic addressed by a recognized expert like Dr. Weltzin on a national show like Katie’s. Publicity like this creates more awareness that men are also affected by eating disorders, and that can help save lives. As a man who struggled with an eating disorder, I know the importance of getting the right treatment as early as possible.”
Dr. Weltzin is a published author who has appeared as an eating disorders expert on several national news and talk shows. Most recently, he presented at the 2013 National Eating Disorders Association conference, where he addressed the cultural risk factors impacting men and the unique barriers they experience accessing treatment.
