(Oconomowoc, Wis.) Michael M. Miller, M.D., FASAM, FAPA, medical director of Herrington Recovery Center at Rogers Memorial Hospital, will be honored by the American Society of Addiction Medicine (ASAM) during the awards luncheon at the organization’s 44th Annual Medical-Scientific (Med-Sci) Conference in Chicago, Ill. According to ASAM, Dr. Miller will receive the Annual Award “for outstanding contributions to the growth and vitality of our Society, for thoughtful leadership in the field, and for deep understanding of the art and science of addiction medicine.”

Featuring internationally known experts in addiction medicine, Med-Sci 2013 (“New Treatments in Addiction Medicine”) is scheduled for April 25-28 and will address the multi-faceted nature of addiction – its genesis, impact and treatment. The ASAM Conference offers addiction professionals from a variety of disciplines, as well as primary care and other physicians, the opportunity to learn more about neurobiology and the newest clinical approaches to addiction.
According to Dr. Miller, a past president of ASAM and current director of the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and The ABAM Foundation, “Med-Sci is the largest and most comprehensive continuing medical education conference in addiction and draws attendees from all over the world. This year’s attendance will exceed 1,000 for the first time in ASAM’s history.”
Dr. Miller’s contributions to Med-Sci 2013 will include co-leading the second symposium (Clinical Quality Measurement in Addiction Medicine) on Friday, April 26. He will also serve on a panel during the policy plenary session (US Drug Crisis – The Addiction Treatment Gap) on Saturday, April 27. Later that day, Dr. Miller’s accomplishments will be honored during the 2013 ASAM Awards Luncheon.
“I am really pleased that the Opening Scientific Plenary and R. Brinkley Smithers Distinguished Scientist Lecture will be presented by Dr. Joseph Westermeyer,” Dr. Miller continued. “He was my fellowship director 30 years ago at the University of Minnesota and taught me much of what I know about how to be a broad-based clinician in addiction medicine.” Dr. Miller will be presenting again at this year’s Public Policy Plenary, which he co-founded as long-time chair of ASAM’s Public Policy Committee.
ASAM is a professional society representing over 3,000 physicians dedicated to increasing access and improving quality of addiction treatment, educating physicians and the public, supporting research and prevention, and promoting the appropriate role of physicians in the care of patients with addictions. Each year, the Med-Sci Conference draws physicians, nurses, psychologists, counselors and healthcare professionals dedicated to the treatment, education, research and prevention of addiction.
About Dr. Miller
A board-certified general psychiatrist and addiction psychiatrist, Dr. Miller has practiced addiction medicine for three decades and is certified in addiction medicine by the ABAM. He is a Fellow of both the American Psychiatric Association and the ASAM. Dr. Miller now leads two of ASAM’s action groups: Descriptive and Diagnostic Terminology Action Group and Practice and Performance Measurement Action Group. Dr. Miller has also served as managing editor of the soon-to-be-published edition of The ASAM Criteria. He also contributed to ASAM courses, conferences and textbooks for over 20 years, including serving on the Program Committee for Med-Sci.
As part of his role at Rogers, Dr. Miller serves on the faculty for the Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship programs of the University of Wisconsin-Madison (UWM) and the Medical College of Wisconsin, as well as for the new UWM Addiction Medicine Fellowship. He was previously named Citizen of the Year by the Wisconsin Association on Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse (WAAODA) in 2001 and Professional of the Year by WAAODA in 2005. Dr. Miller was also named the national physician Clinician of the Year by Addiction Professional Magazine in 2011.
