Madison – An application from the Wisconsin Public Service Corporation (WPSC) to install a new, multi-pollutant control system at the Weston Generating Station Unit 3 was granted preliminary approval today on a unanimous vote by the Wisconsin Public Service Commission.

The proposed project is intended to allow the continued operation of Weston 3 and avoid an early retirement and replacement, cut air pollution, and create and maintain new and existing jobs in and around Marathon County.

The new technology utilized for the project, ReACT, is designed to reduce emissions of SOx by more than 90 percent, along with achieving reductions in NOx and mercury emissions from Weston 3 in order to comply with current and future state and federal emissions regulations and the Consent Decree that WPSC entered into with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

The utility contended, and the Commission agreed, that the project will provide required air emission controls to meet EPA standards at a lower cost than other alternatives.
