Statement from Menominee Tribal Chairman Craig Corn

A great deal of activity has continued over the last week as the Menominee Indian Tribe of Wisconsin prepares for our next meeting with Governor Scott Walker on Wednesday, October 23. We appreciate the Governor’s leadership and the opportunity we will have to share our thoughts and show him that we have met his criteria for approval of the proposed Kenosha Casino.

We are optimistic that we will fulfill the Governor’s criteria, including:

  • No New Net Gaming – Our proposed casino replaces the Dairyland Greyhound track site. In addition, the Menominee agree to close one of our two existing casinos.
  • Community Support – Public response to this project has been overwhelmingly positive. We have the support of the people of Kenosha and the political leadership in southeast Wisconsin. The national response is also gratifying, including that from Green Bay Packer great Bart Starr who says our proposal will improve the standard of living for the tribe.
  • Consensus – We believe that through the existing gaming compacts and the support we’ve received from other tribes, we have reached consensus for our project among the tribes.
  • Last week the Menominee and Oneida Tribe reached agreement on a business relationship focused on banking services for the Kenosha casino and resort. Positive things can happen when tribal leaders talk. Many times I have reached out to the Ho-Chunk and Forest County Potawatomi asking them to join us in dialogue. It’s what the Governor asked for and we agree it’s the right thing to do.

The Menominee are confident that the benefits of a Kenosha Casino to the state are too good to turn down. The Kenosha Casino will help our tribe and its more than 8800 members realize much needed revenue to raise our standard of living. It will generate 5000 good paying jobs and it will be one of the biggest construction projects statewide, employing thousands of construction workers. It will not harm any other Tribe in the State.

We are confident that the Menominee Hard Rock Casino in Kenosha is a WIN for the tribe, a WIN for Kenosha and a WIN for the State of Wisconsin.
