The Granville-Brown Deer Chamber, a community and business partnership linking the northwest side of Milwaukee and the Village of Brown Deer, announced it will hold a Diversity Dialogue program on Tues., Oct. 29. The event will feature Maria Flores of the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) as the guest speaker. Sponsored by Helwig Carbon Products, Inc., the program will run from 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 a.m. at The Milwaukee Job Corps Center, 6665 N. 60th St. in Milwaukee.
The program’s theme is “Promoting a Respectful Workplace Through Diversity and Equal Employment Opportunity Awareness.” The discussion will address issues including whether a business is at risk of loss of productivity, decreased morale, lower employee engagement, higher turnover, and a greater risk for EEOC claims. The presentation will include information appropriate for small and large business owners, as well as human resources professionals.
Additional topics addressed by the program include:
· Another Pretty Face – Using “appearance” as a hiring selection tool.
· What is respect? – How do you define respect in terms of cultural differences in the workplace?
· Hostile Work Environment – What actions can be described as harassment?
· Define Inappropriate – Understanding cultural diversity can help avoid conflicts.
Flores, who has worked for the EEOC since 1991, is the Program Manager at the U.S. EEOC and has a Bachelor’s Degree from Marquette University. She has a wealth of experience in presenting information on affirmative action, discrimination, diversity, and promoting a respectful workplace. Flores has received numerous awards and honors from multiple divisions of the U.S. Government.
