Some training programs will continue at 1329 West National building

MILWAUKEE (May 15, 2013) – Esperanza Unida, Inc., a non-profit workforce development organization located on Milwaukee’s south side, recently transitioned all staff to the 611 West National Ave. International Building after identifying water damage at the 1329 West National Building. Esperanza Unida is utilizing this as an opportunity to accelerate its efforts to restructure the training operations on that site.

“Last week, after detecting increasing dampness in the building, I instructed all staff to prepare their belongings to be moved to the 611 International Building,” said Manny Perez, Esperanza Unida’s General Manager and Advisor. “The move was made proactively to protect employee and trainee safety.”

Most of the move was completed last Friday. On Monday, staff met with city inspectors on-site to review the situation. The inspectors approved of the move already taking place and recommended that hands-on training for welding and forklift could continue in the back of the building. The move was completed by 5:00 p.m. Monday.

“Inspectors were pleased to see that Esperanza Unida’s managers and executives were already taking the necessary measures to ensure safety,” said Perez. “I look forward to implementing any additional recommendations by the city to ensure the safety of the 1329 West National building.”

Mr. Perez joined Esperanza Unida as General Manager on March 4, 2013 and immediately began efforts to restructure and reorganize operations at the 1329 West National building, where many of the organization’s training programs take place. After detecting worsening conditions in the building, Perez has been able to accelerate the goal to eventually consolidate Esperanza Unida’s professional services. Moving employees out of the building was already part of Esperanza Unida’s long-term plan.

Mr. Perez is consulting a contractor to assess the infrastructure and determine the proper course of action for the 1329 West National building. The organization is using the damage as an opportunity to consolidate operations and assess long-term infrastructure goals. In particular, the organization is targeting improvements at the 611 West National International Building, including an immediate need to replace HVAC units and address roof repairs.

“We are actively engaged in conversations with foundations, the private sector and governmental units to address the critical infrastructure needs that are essential to completing our mission to help people become self-sufficient,” said Perez. “The entire community must unite around supporting the organization’s critical workforce, economic development and training services.”

Esperanza Unida helps people to become self-sufficient workers and support private sector employers. The organization supports outcome-based targeted training, skills development and entrepreneurship.
