Madison, Wis. (November 25, 2013) – Edgewood College recently honored Gloria Jones-Bey with this year’s Mazzuchelli Medallion. The awarding of the Samuel Mazzuchelli medallion recognizes those who cultivate intellectual and spiritual resources to empower others. The Medallion, one of the College’s most significant honors, is named for Fr. Samuel Mazzuchelli, who founded the Dominican Sisters of Sinsinawa.
Ms. Jones-Bey’s passion for improving the lives of others, as reflected in her personal and professional life, served as the inspiration for this year’s award.
For more than fifteen years she served as an assistant clinical professor of nursing at the University of Wisconsin, School of Nursing, while serving as Vice President of Patient Care at Meriter Hospital.
In 1999 she joined the Nursing faculty at Edgewood College, in the Graduate program. As a teacher and mentor, she provided intellectual and professional resources while modeling the Dominican tradition of study, contemplation and action within a community of learners.
Her work in the Greater Madison community is marked by positive creative and professional vision in her service to helping others. She is a charter member of Women in Focus, a community service organization for minority youth committed to funding scholarships and providing resources to minority students.
As a founding member of the African-American Ethnic Academy, she has been a strong advocate and a tireless voice especially for women and minorities, assisting them in their own educational pursuits.
Ms. Jones-Bey has served and continues to serve on many boards and committees including an Advisory Committee for Madison College, United Way and the Wisconsin Chamber Orchestra.
She has been the recipient of numerous awards for her service: the Dane County Athena Award, Woman of Distinction, an honorary degree from Edgewood College, the NAACP Whitney Young Award for Public Service and the UW School of Nursing Community Nursing Award.
