Edgewood College: College hosts garage sale with a difference

Contact: Ed Taylor, Director of Marketing & Communications 608-663-2333

Madison, Wis. (November 20, 2013) – Edgewood College invites you to a “garage sale” with a difference: all proceeds will fund a playground in Chiapas, Mexico, to be built by Edgewood College students in January 2014.

The project is part of the curriculum of Bridging Borders: U.S. /Mexican Immigration, a Sociology class focused on borders and bridges between the neighboring people of Mexico and the U.S. In the class, students examine the root causes of Mexican immigration to the U.S., as well as the rhetoric, cultural practices and public policies that have built physical and symbolic walls between the two countries.

The capstone to the class includes a trip to Chiapas in January, where Edgewood College students, and students from the Chiapas region, will build a playground using recycled materials.

The Greater Madison community is invited to support this educational outreach – and perhaps even find a few treasures – from 8:00 am – 3:00 pm, Saturday, November 23, 2013, on the campus of Edgewood College. Our “garage” is located on the first floor of the Henry J. Predolin Humanities Center.
