Newly enacted Wisconsin Fast Forward law authorizes office, $15 million in training grants

MADISON – Now that Governor Walker has signed the Wisconsin Fast Forward measure into law, Department of Workforce Development (DWD) Secretary Reggie Newson is moving quickly to implement its provisions, starting with recruitment of a director for the new Office of Skills Development.

“The need for workforce reform is immediate,” Secretary Newson said. “That’s why Governor Walker had the Wisconsin Fast Forward legislation introduced on his behalf ahead of the budget. The measure authorizes state funded worker training grants, totaling $15 million, and the office to administer the program. This is part one of his workforce reforms, and we are now hitting the ground running.

Governor Walker signed the measure on Wednesday, and today, DWD posted a job notice that seeks a talented, innovative director, who will be responsible for the running the customized worker training grant program. The director will manage a staff of three and report directly to Secretary Newson.

In addition to the Office of Skills Development and the grant program, the Wisconsin Fast Forward legislation also creates a new Labor Market Information System (LMIS) to track job vacancies and link unemployed workers to openings they are qualified to fill or to training to help them become qualified.

The job description and application instructions for the position, Director, Office of Skills Development, are available on the Office of State Employment Relations Wisconsin.Jobs site.

The deadline for applications is March 25, one week from this coming Monday.
