Eco-friendly sports destination recognized for sustainable practices

HIGHBRIDGE, Wis. (Jan. 2, 2013) – Highbridge Hills Sports Complex, the world’s largest disc golf complex, has found ways to become more sustainable and have earned Travel Green Wisconsin certification. The complex joins over 350 Travel Green Wisconsin certified events, attractions, and destinations.

“We’re thrilled to recognize Highbridge Hills Sports Complex for their green practices and becoming Travel Green Wisconsin certified,” said Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. “This is a unique tourism business that found ways to make small changes that added up to create big impacts. They set an excellent example for other sports destinations to reduce their environmental impact.”

The complex is a “green” sports adventure, training and competition facility. As standard operating procedures, the complex reuses all building materials and scraps from jobs, including glass and plastic. In addition, local food and products, such as awards, are purchased and the complex has committed to hosting at least one event monthly for sustainable green adventure sports and activities to stay fit.

This year, the Department of Tourism adopted a flat fee of $95 for membership in the Travel Green Wisconsin certification. The change was based on industry feedback and to encourage a wider variety of tourism businesses and organizations to consider implementing sustainable practices in their operations. In addition, the benefits of being a member have increased.

Travel Green Wisconsin is the first of its kind in the nation and serves as a model to promote environmentally-friendly practices in the tourism industry. The program is unique for its inclusion of all tourism-related businesses and organizations including but not limited to attractions, events, accommodations, outfitters, restaurants, retail, visitor centers and more. Tourism businesses interested in learning more about becoming certified can contact Travel Green Wisconsin Program Manager Shelly Allness at mallness@travelwisconsin.com or 608-261-8767.
