Eco-friendly shop recognized for sustainable practices

WASHBURN, Wis. (Jan. 2, 2013) – Energy saving appliances, water conservation and purchasing local products are just a few ways North Coast Coffee has committed to sustainability and earned Travel Green Wisconsin certification. North Coast Coffee joins over 350 Travel Green Wisconsin certified events, attractions, and destinations.

“We’re thrilled to recognize North Coast Coffee for becoming Travel Green Wisconsin certified,” said Tourism Secretary Stephanie Klett. “Small changes add up to create big impacts and the coffee shop does a fantastic job of implementing green practices to reducing their environmental impact.”

As standard operating procedures, local and fair trade food is purchased as well as local products. In addition, ENERGY STAR qualified appliances are used, including an espresso machine. A water barrel is also outside and collects air conditioner water from the roof, which is then used to water plants.

This year, the Department of Tourism adopted a flat fee of $95 for membership in the Travel Green Wisconsin certification. The change was based on industry feedback and to encourage a wider variety of tourism businesses and organizations to consider implementing sustainable practices in their operations. In addition, the benefits of being a member have increased.

Travel Green Wisconsin is the first of its kind in the nation and serves as a model to promote environmentally-friendly practices in the tourism industry. The program is unique for its inclusion of all tourism-related businesses and organizations including but not limited to attractions, events, accommodations, outfitters, restaurants, retail, visitor centers and more. Tourism businesses interested in learning more about becoming certified can contact Travel Green Wisconsin Program Manager Shelly Allness at mallness@travelwisconsin.com or 608-261-8767.
