Free memory screenings at two Illinois communities this month facilitate first step in treatment

Chicago (February 7, 2013) – CRL Senior Living Communities is offering free memory screenings at two Illinois communities in February through their partnership with Memory Training Centers of America (MTCA). These tests are the first step in diagnosing Alzheimer’s and dementia, which are increasingly common among aging Americans. With a simple 10-minute screening, participants can determine whether symptoms of memory loss are related to a larger medical issue and receive educational resources that outline treatment options.

Through their partnership with MTCA, CRL also provides professional memory training sessions for individuals experiencing mild to moderate cognitive impairment, conducted by a licensed clinical psychologist, to help seniors with memory loss strengthen their ability to store and retrieve new information.

“MTCA’s memory screenings are a first step on the road to treatment for individuals with cognitive/memory impairment,” said Ari Weinberger, president and CEO of CRL. “Armed with the information they can gain at this session, families can make the best decisions for their loved ones and begin a customized memory training program to improve day-to-day living.”

Together, CRL and MTCA will host free memory screening events this month at two CRL communities:

Wednesday, February 20 at North Grove Manor – 6-7 p.m.
5520 Lincoln Avenue, Morton Grove, IL 60053, (847) 583-9800

Wednesday, February 27 at Arbor Ridge – 6-7 p.m.
1651 Richfield Avenue, Highland Park, IL 60035, (224) 765-0094

Together, MTCA and CRL have worked together in multiple facilities to develop seniors’ abilities to build a reserve of prevention to guard against future memory loss. At the free screening events, clinicians take 10 minutes to perform a series of tests to determine participants’ memory fitness. These sessions also provide an overview of the training process and examples of the types of training sessions that take place. MTCA offers programs that utilize memory, attention and other cognitive strengthening exercises for anyone who wishes to maintain healthy cognitive functioning throughout their lifetime. Cognitive training sessions provided by MTCA are a service paid for by Medicare.

“Seeking treatment for memory issues is a significant decision for families, and CRL offers a high level of support to help them work through the various options,” said Patricia Stanik, Ph.D., Licensed Psychologist and MTCA’s Director of Wisconsin. “These memory screenings help families learn about the different treatment plans that are available and what type of facility is appropriate for their loved one.”
