– Grant awarded to Winnebago Literary Council supports
“Healthy Eating in the Classroom” Initiative –
OSHKOSH, Wis. (November 14, 2013) – The Cousins Subs® Make it Better Foundation has awarded a grant to the Winnebago County Literacy Council (WCLC) to sponsor its “Healthy Eating in the Classroom” nutrition program. The program serves more than 100 refugees who are learning to acclimate to the community.
The WCLC teaches English to both adults and children from foreign countries, such as Jordan, Somalia, Pakistan, China, Russia and Iraq. Participants in the program do not know the language or culture and are motivated by a desire to read, speak, and perform everyday skills with confidence so they can thrive in our community.
“Our goal is to leverage the ‘Healthy Eating in the Classroom’ initiative to increase learners’ participation during class, while also reducing hunger and improving overall health and educational outcomes for our learners,” explained Terri Hansen, executive director of Winnebago County Literary Council. “Through this program, learners can eat nutritious foods, such as nuts, fruit, cheese and whole grains, together in a safe environment.”
“WCLC’s ‘Healthy Eating in the Classroom’ program fulfills the Make It Better Foundation’s mission to Make It A Better Day through promoting health and wellness and education,” said Christine Specht-Palmert, president and COO of Cousins Subs, and president of the Make It Better Foundation. “Numerous studies have shown that hungry students are more easily distracted and have a harder time concentrating. Providing nutritious snacks will help to alleviate this problem, allowing students to concentrate on learning the language and culture to enhance their new lives.”
The Make it Better Foundation has established three areas of interest it believes are vital to any community: health and wellness, hunger and youth education.
“The families that come to WCLC work hard to become active, contributing members of society,” continued Hansen. “We will be armed to help them achieve this goal with this generous grant from the Make It Better Foundation.”
