Preemie and newborn, emergency, orthopedic, heart, pulmonary and cancer care specialties all ranked in the top 10
MILWAUKEE (2/4/2013) – Parents magazine today revealed the exclusive findings from its 10 Best Children’s Hospitals survey, ranking Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee No. 4 in the nation. In addition, six specialty programs were ranked in the top 10, including preemie and newborn care No. 1, emergency care No. 3, orthopedic care No. 6, heart care No. 7, pulmonary care No. 8 and cancer care No. 9. Parents surveyed 66 children’s hospitals to determine where the more than 3 million children hospitalized each year can get the best care possible. The results of the extensive report appear in the March 2013 issue of Parents magazine available online at parents.com/best-hospital-2013.

Preemie and Newborn Care ranked #1
The Neonatal Intensive Care Unit provides state-of-the-art care for more than 700 infants each year. Children’s Hospital’s Level IV unit provides hope to preemies and babies with the most complex health problems. As infants improve, they often are transferred to the special Newborn Progressive Care Unit, which helps their families prepare to take them home.
Emergency Care ranked #3
Children’s Hospital is a Level I Pediatric Trauma Center. The region’s most critically ill and injured children and teens are brought to the Milwaukee hospital. The pediatric emergency medicine specialists and nurses have extensive training, and they treat more than 60,000 children each year. In addition, Children’s Hospital injury prevention programs help keep kids safe and out of the hospital.
Orthopedic Care ranked #6
Staff in the Variety Orthopedic Center provides care for everyday and difficult or rare pediatric problems. When treating conditions such as scoliosis, special imaging equipment is used to reduce radiation exposure and avoid possible negative side effects on growing bodies. The Sports Medicine Program offers specialized concussion care to ensure the best evaluation and treatment for young athletes.

The Herma Heart Center at Children’s Hospital is one of the nation’s top pediatric cardiac programs. The Center’s team of specialists has some of the best outcomes for medical and surgical treatment of congenital heart defects and heart disease in children. Their expertise includes diagnosis and treatment of fetal cardiac issues, Marfan syndrome, heart transplants and services for adults with congenital heart disease.
Pulmonary Care ranked #8
Children’s Hospital pulmonary specialists are nationally known for their work in treating breathing issues that range from asthma to extremely complicated conditions. The hospital is one of just a handful of facilities with the expertise to care for children with complex tracheal disorders. The program’s cystic fibrosis care and research is cutting edge. The Children’s Hospital Cancer and Blood Disorders Center is among the largest and most experienced pediatric programs. It is 1 of just 21 centers nationwide designated as a Phase I Center by Children’s Oncology Group. This allows patients to benefit from clinical research trials that explore new therapies for childhood cancer. The center uses innovative alternative donor options to offer blood and marrow transplants to more patients.
