JANESVILLE, WI – United States service veterans interested in a career in industrial mechanics are encouraged to contact Blackhawk Technical College (BTC), which is expanding its one-year Industrial Mechanic program for the 2013-14 school year courtesy of a federal grant.

Veterans receive first priority for admission to the program, funded by the Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant. Those accepted in the program are eligible to apply through BTC for financial aid and scholarship funds to help cover the cost of schooling. The grant does not cover tuition, textbook fees and other school costs.

Also eligible to apply to the expanded program are workers currently eligible for assistance under the Trade Adjustment Assistance for Workers program.

Blackhawk is one of 16 Wisconsin technical colleges that is sharing the $14.9 million TAACCCT award for a four-year project to develop, expand and improve career chances in advanced manufacturing. Schools in the program are required to monitor the success of their students gaining employment in their manufacturing fields.

The Industrial Mechanic program is 33 credits. Twenty-seven credits are directly related to manufacturing subjects. Students also will take three credit courses in Oral/Interpersonal Communication and College Mathematics and the Student Success course, which is required of all Blackhawk students.

Veterans and others interested in applying for the expanded Industrial Mechanic program should contact project manager Julie Barreau at 608-757-7648 or at jbarreau@blackhawk.edu.

The project is funded by a grant awarded by the U.S. Department of Labor-Employment and Training Administration’s Trade Adjustment Assistance Community College and Career Training Grant program. The $584,831 grant award represents 100 percent of the total project cost.
